DPIIT startup recognition: eligibility and how to apply
DPIIT recognition is the government's official recognition of an entity as a startup, issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. It is free, done online, and is the gateway to most Startup India benefits.
Eligibility
- Incorporated as a private limited company, LLP, registered partnership firm, or (since 2026) a cooperative society.
- Not older than 10 years from the date of incorporation.
- Turnover not exceeding ₹200 crore in any financial year since incorporation.
- Working towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or a scalable business model with high potential for employment or wealth creation.
- Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
These limits come from the revised startup definition notified on 4 February 2026, which raised the turnover cap from ₹100 crore to ₹200 crore.
How to apply
- 1.Register on the Startup India portal.
- 2.Fill the recognition form: entity details, directors or partners, address, and sector.
- 3.Describe the innovation: the problem, your solution, uniqueness and how it will scale.
- 4.Upload the Certificate of Incorporation and any supporting material (pitch deck, website, patents).
- 5.Submit. Recognition is usually granted within a few working days if details are complete.

Recognition opens the door to the startup tax holiday, self-certification under certain labour and environmental laws, faster patent examination with fee rebates, relaxed public procurement norms, and access to government funding schemes. See Startup India benefits.
